Mystery Booster Commander Partner Eligibility Checker

Confirm synthetic partner rules before you register a pair.

Partner Checker

Commander Draft with Mystery Booster Commander Edition adds a synthetic partner exception easy to misapply when players excitedly pair legends from spoiler hype. Official release notes state: in Commander Draft events using these boosters, you may treat any eligible commander that has one or fewer colors in its color identity and does not already have partner as though it had partner. Printed partner still functions normally. Two-color legends—including Tolabow, Loch Rascal, Joven and Chandler, and most multi-color spoilers—do not qualify for synthetic partner.

This page hosts an interactive partner checker tool plus human-readable guidance. Use the tool at deck registration; use the prose below when explaining rulings to the table.

Partner eligibility checker

Enter a commander's colour identity count to see whether Mystery Booster Commander Draft treats it as having partner.

Already has Partner printed?

How synthetic partner differs from printed partner

Printed partner appears on cards like classic Commander precon legends and requires both commanders to have the keyword—or one half of a known partner pair where rules explicitly allow. Synthetic partner grants the keyword for deck construction purposes only during draft events with this product. It does not add partner to the card’s Oracle text for other formats.

If a legend already says partner, synthetic partner is irrelevant—you follow printed text. If a legend has two colors in identity, synthetic partner cannot apply, even if one color is minor.

Colorless legends with zero colors in identity count as eligible assuming no printed partner unless another restriction applies.

Step-by-step eligibility questions

Ask these in order:

  1. Are you playing Commander Draft with Mystery Booster Commander Edition boosters? If no, synthetic partner does not apply.
  2. Does the legend already have partner printed? If yes, use printed partner rules only.
  3. How many colors appear in the legend’s color identity? If two or more, synthetic partner fails.
  4. Does your intended pair both qualify (each one or fewer colors, neither already has partner unless printed)? If only one qualifies, you need a different partner or single commander build.

The interactive tool encodes this logic—enter color identity count and whether partner is printed, then read the result aloud to the pod.

Examples from spoiler season

Eligible hypotheticals: mono-white Seluma-style one-color legends without printed partner paired with another mono-color legend without printed partner—both gain synthetic partner for the event. Colorless utility legends from reprint slots may pair with mono-red aggressive legends when neither has printed partner.

Ineligible: Joven and Chandler (three red mana symbol identity) paired with anything via synthetic partner—must use printed partner legends only. Tolabow (two-color) cannot synthetic partner. Any legend with printed partner already does not need synthetic partner but can pair with other printed partner cards.

For synergy ideas after confirming eligibility, see partner pairings—theorycraft is separate from legality.

Common disputes at tables

Players confuse color identity count with mana cost. A legend costing one white and one blue has two colors in identity even if you only run basics. Players assume Rulebreaker expands partner eligibility—it does not unless rulebreaker text explicitly mentions partner, which standard rulebreaker cards do not.

Players ask to synthetic partner in post-draft constructed Commander—decline unless your group explicitly houserules; official notes scope synthetic partner to draft events with this product.

After the checker says eligible

Build combined color identity mana bases using how to build. Track separate commander taxes if both legends are cast from the zone. Reveal both during setup.

If the checker says ineligible, options are: pick one commander, find a printed partner legend in pool, or rebuild colors. Do not proceed hoping the judge has not read release notes—MagicCon Atlanta judges will.

Process: how to play, draft checklist. Card text: new commanders. Draft rankings: commander tiers.
