Mystery Booster Commander Edition Legality

Mystery Booster Commander Edition spans multiple card categories with different format permissions. New legends with the MBC set code, most reprints, and select first-to-paper cards become legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage after a defined release window. Playtest cards, acorn-stamped Alchemy designs, and other explicitly marked products remain illegal in Constructed formats regardless of when you open them. Understanding those lines prevents deck registration errors at MagicCon Atlanta and awkward post-Festival sleeving sessions at home.

Official release notes state that MBC cards become legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage following the release of Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 through MagicSecretLair.com. Gen Con 2026 boxes let you play Limited immediately; eternal Constructed must wait until that Secret Lair product ships unless your local judge runs a casual exception.

Categories and format permissions

New-to-Magic MBC commanders such as Tolabow, Loch Rascal, Seluma, Light of Aysen, Joven and Chandler, Whtz, the Bibliophile, Valko Indorian, and Zagorka, Mother of Sanctum enter eternal formats on the Festival timeline above. They follow normal ban list updates—nothing starts banned unless announced on the Commander, Legacy, or Vintage ban lists.

Reprints with Planeswalker stamps stay legal anywhere the original printing was legal. Mystery Booster Commander Edition does not grant new legality to cards previously banned or silver-bordered.

Future Sight frame reprints follow the same rule as their functional text—frames do not affect legality.

Playtest cards from Mystery Booster 2 slots are illegal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage. They exist for Limited chaos and casual free-for-alls. Tournament organizers should enforce this at deck check.

Acorn-stamped cards including several Alchemy conjure designs are not legal in Constructed formats. Overcooked conjuring Food Fight is fine during a Mystery Booster Commander draft; sleeving Overcooked for Tuesday night Commander is not, even after Festival release.

Tsagan, Raider Warlord is a special case called out by Wizards: first paper printing without acorn stamp, legal in eternal formats on the same schedule as other MBC-set new cards because it functions within tabletop rules.

Rulebreaker in constructed Commander

Rulebreaker abilities modify deck construction if and only if the card is your designated commander before the game begins. They do not override singleton copy limits unless explicitly stated, and they do not override minimum or maximum deck sizes except where stated (Whtz removes max deck size but standard Commander still requires exactly one hundred cards minimum).

Examples from release notes: Seluma allows Angels of any color identity but still enforces the one-copy rule and hundred-card minimum. Rulebreaker does not apply when a legend is merely in the ninety-nine. Partner pairs must each qualify independently for their construction breaks if both have rulebreaker text.

Limited versus Constructed at events

Commander Draft using this product follows Limited rules during the event. That includes synthetic partner treatment, sixty-card decks, and playtest cards in decklists. When the same player later builds a hundred-card Commander deck for FNM, strip playtest cards, verify acorn stamps, apply Rulebreaker only to the commander slot, and confirm release timing for MBC-set cards.

Practical checklist before sleeving

Confirm your commander is legal for the target format and release date. Scan the ninety-nine for acorn symbols and playtest borders. Verify color identity with Rulebreaker exceptions applied only where allowed. Check partner legality using the partner checker for draft, and printed partner text for constructed. Cross-reference notable reprints if unsure whether a wildcard is a reprint or a playtest.
