How to Play Mystery Booster Commander Edition

Commander Draft from booster crack to first attack step.

How to Play

Mystery Booster Commander Edition is built for Commander Draft: multiplayer games where each player opens boosters from the product, assembles a sixty-card main deck, selects one or two commanders following partner rules, and battles opponents starting at forty life. Gen Con 2026 debuted the format on the floor; MagicCon Atlanta and home pods using Festival in a Box will use the same booster composition. This guide walks through the full flow so your table spends time playing, not arguing about deck size.

If you prefer video, the embedded Gen Con spoiler stream shows real packs and table reactions—useful context before reading procedural steps below.

Before you crack packs

Confirm pod size—three to four players per draft group is typical for Commander Draft. Each player needs enough boosters from a shared box: a full twenty-four booster box supports multiple pods depending on allocation (often three boosters per player in a four-player pod, but follow event instructions). Seat players, designate a draft captain, and agree on timing for pick-two passes.

Review synthetic partner rules: legends with one or fewer colors without printed partner can be treated as though they had partner in this format. Keep the partner checker open on a phone for eligibility questions.

Pick-two draft procedure

Each booster contains twenty cards tuned for color balance plus high-variance slots. Instead of picking one card per pack, pick two each time the pack reaches you, then pass according to your pod’s direction (left-right-left is common). Track picks cleanly—Mystery Booster pools are large and easy to mis-count.

Prioritize early picks that stay playable regardless of commander: mana fixing, removal, efficient creatures. Locking a legend pack one is risky when rulebreaker clauses need support you have not seen. Mid-draft, read archetype signals from wheeled cards. Late draft, take sideboard options and commander backups.

Playtest cards are legal in Limited—include them in your deck if they fit. Remember they are illegal in constructed Commander later.

Building the sixty-card deck

After drafts conclude, build exactly sixty-card main decks unless event rules say otherwise. Sideboards are typically unused or represent unused pool cards kept face-down—confirm with your judge. Include all basic lands you drafted; nonbasic lands and rocks from wildcard slots define your curve.

Choose commanders from legends you drafted (including reprinted commander slot hits). You may run two commanders if both have partner—printed or synthetic per product rules. Combined color identity restricts mana in your deck. Rulebreaker text applies only to the designated commander during deckbuilding; see Rulebreaker guide.

Use how to build for mana base heuristics and the draft checklist to avoid skipping registration steps.

Pre-game setup

Set life totals to forty. Shuffle decks. Place commanders in the command zone. Mulligan rules follow event documents—Commander Draft often uses partial paris or Vancouver with commander awareness; ask your judge rather than assuming Commander FNM rules.

Reveal commanders during setup so the table knows color identities and partner pairs. Resolve any deck registration issues before randomizing who goes first.

Playing the game

Gameplay follows standard Commander rules unless modified: turn order rotates, combat damage can kill multiple players, commander tax applies per commander cast from the zone. Stack rules, priority, and triggers are unchanged—only deck construction and draft procedure differ from casual Commander night.

Expect chaos: reprints from across Magic history interact in ways Standard players never see. Judges at MagicCon Atlanta will issue format-specific rulings—bring release notes links for conjure cards like Overcooked and for playtest interactions.

After the draft

Casual pods often trade unused pool cards or run second drafts from the same box. If players sleeve for eternal Commander, strip playtest and acorn cards and verify legality timing for new MBC-set cards. Constructed decks require one hundred cards, not sixty.

Where to go next

Study commander tiers before your next event, read spoiler roundup for card knowledge, and check Festival in a Box if you need a box for home play.
